field notes, pencil onlyIt stands about as tall as a coffee mug, on two stubby legs with yellow-and-mint feet. The head is a rounded grey dome, the color of a well-used pencil. One purple eye sits low on the face, a little off center, like it's always about to ask a question.
Nobody taught it to walk step by step. It fell over a few thousand times in simulation until standing up became a habit. The first real step landed on a hardwood floor next to an unopened espresso machine box. It made a small sound. We heard boom.
graphite-boom is that sound. A tiny robot, drawn in lead, stomping somewhere it has never been.
